Pre-Construction Termite Treatment: Why Every New Building in Sri Lanka Needs It

Pre-Construction Termite Treatment: Why Every New Building in Sri Lanka Needs It
Sri Lanka's warm, humid climate is ideal for subterranean termites — and they cause more damage to buildings here than fire and floods combined. Once termites establish themselves inside a completed structure, treatment is more invasive and repairs can run into millions of rupees. That's why pre-construction anti-termite treatment is standard practice for quality builders and is increasingly required in construction specifications.

What Is Pre-Construction Termite Treatment?

Pre-construction (or soil) treatment creates a continuous chemical barrier between the building and the soil beneath it, blocking the route subterranean termites use to enter. The treatment is applied in stages that follow the construction timeline:

  • Foundation stage — treating the sides and bottom of foundation trenches and column pits
  • Plinth stage — treating the soil fill before the floor slab is cast
  • Perimeter stage — treating soil along the external walls after construction

How Sunkem Applies It

Our teams use Biflex 10 TC (Bifenthrin) — a long-lasting, WHO-approved termiticide — applied at controlled dosage rates to form a uniform barrier with no gaps. Every treatment is documented, and we issue a treatment certificate that architects, engineers, and property buyers can rely on.

Why It's Worth It

  • A fraction of the cost of post-construction treatment, which requires drilling through finished floors
  • Long-lasting protection for the most vulnerable years of the building's life
  • Protects the structure itself — roof timber, door frames, built-in cupboards, and parquet flooring
  • Required for peace of mind in high-risk areas — most of Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones

Already Built? Post-Construction Treatment

For existing buildings, we create the same protective barrier by drilling discreet injection points along walls at regular intervals and injecting termiticide under pressure — then sealing the points neatly. If you've spotted mud tubes or hollow-sounding timber, read our guide on termite warning signs and act quickly.

For Builders, Architects & Developers

Sunkem International works alongside contractors to schedule treatment stages around your construction program, with documentation for your project files. We serve construction projects across Colombo, Galle, and island-wide.
